Step-by-Step Guide for Front CV Axle Replacement

Maintaining your Toyota Tundra is crucial for a smooth and safe driving experience. Replacing a CV axle is a common repair task for Tundra owners. This article provides a comprehensive guide on how to replace the front CV axle on Toyota Tundra models from 2007 to the present.

Tools and Materials

  • New CV axle
  • Ratchet wrench
  • Sockets (10mm, 12mm, 19mm, 21mm)
  • Pry bar
  • Hammer
  • Gloves

Safety Precautions

Before starting any repairs, ensure your Tundra is parked on a level surface and the parking brake is engaged. Wear gloves and safety glasses for protection.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Remove the Wheel

Use the 19mm socket to loosen the lug nuts on the front wheel that corresponds to the faulty CV axle. Do not remove them entirely.

Raise the truck using a jack and place it on jack stands. Remove the lug nuts and take off the wheel.

2. Disconnect the Ball Joint

Use the 12mm socket to remove the cotter pin from the ball joint. Separate the ball joint from the spindle using a pry bar.

3. Remove the Caliper and Rotor

Disconnect the brake caliper and hang it safely from the suspension with a zip tie or wire.

Remove the two 12mm bolts holding the rotor and remove it.

4. Unbolt the CV Axle Nut

Use the 32mm socket to loosen the CV axle nut on the hub. Do not remove it entirely.

5. Separate the CV Axle from the Hub

Use a hammer and a chisel to tap lightly on the spindle to separate the CV axle from the hub.

6. Remove the CV Axle from the Transmission

Locate the three bolts attaching the inner CV joint to the transmission. Use the 10mm socket to remove them.

Once the bolts are removed, carefully pull the CV axle out of the transmission.

7. Install the New CV Axle

Insert the new CV axle into the transmission and tighten the three bolts using the 10mm socket.

8. Reassemble the Components

Reattach the CV axle to the hub. Tighten the CV axle nut with the 32mm socket to the specified torque (250 ft-lbs).

Reinstall the rotor, caliper, and brake lines.

9. Connect the Ball Joint

Reconnecting the ball joint. Push it back into its seat and insert the cotter pin.

10. Reinstall the Wheel

Place the wheel back on the hub and tighten the lug nuts using the 19mm socket.

11. Lower the Vehicle

Slowly lower the vehicle by removing the jack stands and tighten the lug nuts completely.

Your Toyota Tundra's front CV axle has now been successfully replaced. Test drive the vehicle to ensure proper functionality.
