Bc Ndp Mla Jennifer Rice Announces Her Departure From Politics

BC NDP MLA Jennifer Rice announces her departure from politics

MLA for North Coast has served six years and is the second New Democrat MLA to step down recently

Rice says she's proud of her work on behalf of her constituents, but it's time for a change

. Heading into an election year, the B.C. NDP has lost a second MLA.

MLA for North Coast Jennifer Rice announced on Thursday that she will not be running for re-election in October.

Rice was first elected in 2017, and has served as Parliamentary Secretary for Rural Development for the past two years.

"It has been the honour of my life to serve the people of the North Coast," said Rice in a statement.

"I'm incredibly proud of the work we've been able to do together, from creating new jobs to investing in education and healthcare.

"However, it's time for me to step back and spend more time with my family, and pursue other opportunities."

Rice's departure, follows the departure of MLA for Vancouver-Hastings, Niki Sharma in November.

Rice’s constituency includes more than 111,000 people and covers a massive area that stretches from the Alaska Panhandle south to Bella Bella and east past Tweedsmuir Provincial Park.

"I want to thank my constituents for their trust and support over the past six years," said Rice. "It has been a privilege to represent them in the legislature.

"I wish the next MLA for North Coast all the best in their work." Rice, a lawyer, did not say what she plans to do next.

NDP leader David Eby said he was "sad to see her go."

"Jennifer has been a tireless advocate for her constituents, and she will be missed in the legislature," said Eby.

"I want to thank her for her service, and I wish her all the best in her future endeavours."
